A QWERTY keyboard layout is one type of keyboard layout invented by Christopher Latham Sholes in the year 1873 to be used for on ancient typewriters. QWERTY keyboard typically refers to a layout of keys (buttons) in such a way that top left first six letters spell out the word "QWERTY" while distributing the commonly typed alphabetical letters(such as a,e,i,o,u) among the less common ones(such as v,w,x,y,z). The layout won its popularity when it solved the jamming problem of frequently used keys being on full time use on one end of the keyboard while the non-frequently used are "at rest" on the other end.

The key board evolved in time from manual typewriter to the mostly seen digital version of today which also includes keys with more than one function making it convenient for use in today's daily computers and mobile devices like smartphones which in return makes the layout more popular.
However, typing special character languages eg french, may require alteration of the QWERTY layout in exchange for single key tap input of special characters, or the use of third party software to enable the same keyboard layout provide such character functions.
